Tableau Tip #1 – Why some things look different on Tableau Server and how to fix it

Tableau Readers.

Today is my first day on a new journey.

I aim to publish 10 Tableau Tips and Tricks each month (sometimes more than 10). Some of these tips have been put aside for many years. Most are from the Tableau #datafam at large. If I use a tip or trick created by someone else, I will note the source and a link to where I found it on their blog, X, LinkedIn, etc.

Please join me on this journey. If you have a Tableau tip or trick to share, please send it my way. I would be glad to include it and credit you for it.

This first one is from a co-worker of mine. Gary Palmerson is a Senior Manager, Business Intelligence Analyst in LifeCo at USAA. Again, Thank you, Gary!

Per Gary: Team, just wanted to share this example of why some things looks different on server and how to fix it.

In the first screenshot below from Tableau Server, some items appear bolded while others do not.

In the second screenshot from Tableau Desktop, everything looks uniform font size and weight.

That is because some of these are set to Tableau Bold and others are set to Tableau Book + BOLD. See screenshot below.

Even though these often look the same and you would think should be the same, they often render differently on web in the same way a 200 lb man looks different than a 150 lb man holding a 50 lb weight.  The best way to fix this is to take bolding out of your usage and only use the Tableau Font Family to make your fonts thicker.  In ascending weights, Light, Book, Regular, Medium, Semibold, Bold.
