Let’s say someone sent you a Tableau .twbx file, and you want to get the original data file from it. To do this, you first you need to unpack the file.
- In File Explorer, go to the folder that contains the packaged Tableau workbook. It will have a .twbx extension and have a type name of Tableau Packaged Workbook.
- Right-click on the workbook and then click on Show more options.

3. From the dropdown, click on Unpackage.

4. You will now see a second version of the Tableau Workbook. This version will have a .twb extension and a type name of Tableau Workbook. This tells us this workbook is unpackaged. You will also see a new sub-folder which contains the extracted data file.

5. If you click through the sub-folders in this new sub-folder, you will see the original data file. In this case, it was the Sample-Superstore Excel file.
