Tableau Tip #6 – Get the Original Data File from a Tableau .twbx File

Let’s say someone sent you a Tableau .twbx file, and you want to get the original data file from it. To do this, you first you need to unpack the file.

  1. In File Explorer, go to the folder that contains the packaged Tableau workbook. It will have a .twbx extension and have a type name of Tableau Packaged Workbook.
  2. Right-click on the workbook and then click on Show more options.

3. From the dropdown, click on Unpackage.

4. You will now see a second version of the Tableau Workbook. This version will have a .twb extension and a type name of Tableau Workbook. This tells us this workbook is unpackaged. You will also see a new sub-folder which contains the extracted data file.

5. If you click through the sub-folders in this new sub-folder, you will see the original data file. In this case, it was the Sample-Superstore Excel file.
